Big Toe Pain Causes Like Running And Relief Tips

Big Toe pain and its causes. The big toe is a large structure in the feet, especially when you compare it with the thumb in the hand. There can be pain in the big toe and there are not many reasons. So, one can narrow down on all the causes and guess the exact reason of big toe pain. However, no matter what the cause of pain, it is difficult and time taking to relieve the big toe pain.

Big toe pain causes : 

  • Big toe pain at night : If you have experienced an attack of severe burning pain at the top of big toe at night, then it could be a flare up of Gout. This is an inflammatory disease, like rheumatoid arthritis and it mostly affects men. Gout causes intense pain in the joints, swelling, redness and tenderness in the area. The pain continues for hours at one stretch and usually subsides in the night itself. 
  • Bunion Pain : Have a good look at the feet. If the big toe looks slightly bent towards the second toe, then it is a deformity known as bunion. It is often caused by wearing tight shoes or ill fitting shoes. Bunion is a really painful condition and needs a lot of time to correct itself. 
  • Arthritis : In middle age or old age, there are chances of having arthritis. It causes burning pain in the joint along with difficulty in moving that part of the body.
  • Big toe pain due to running : Excessive running or using an improper technique while running can lead to big toe pain. 
  • Turf toe : This is a condition that most often troubles players who have to run a lot and accelerate or decelerate quickly ( think football, rugby and tennis ). It is caused by the forces on the big toe when we propel our body forward or skid to stop quickly. This mostly happens on artificially prepared turf. 
  • Wearing high heels : Well, this is a major cause of big toe pain in women. It can lead to minor deformity and swelling in the big toe and the ball of foot at the base. This is known as high heels syndrome. 
  • Big Toe nerve pain : Nerve compression ( or pinched nerve ) in the leg can cause random pain in the big toe or in any other part of the feet. People who are diabetic are at risk for a nervous damage known as diabetic neuropathy which mainly causes pain and electric sensation in the feet. 
  • Fibromyalgia : This complicated disease is known to cause burning sensation in the feet. It can make it difficult to bear any pressure or touch on the feet. 
Big toe pain relief tips : 
This pain can be alleviated by the following remedies : 
  • Foot massage is a way to get relief from foot pain. 
  • Eat an anti-inflammatory diet to reduce the effects of arthritis and gout. 
  • Leg strengthening exercises ( done to improve the strength of tendons and ligaments in big toe ) are great to prevent further pain. 
  • Soak the feet in warm water or an epsom salt bath. It is very relaxing.
