Severe Lower Back Pain Causes And Relief. Back pain in most people is usually dull. It is constant and has been chronic. But, severe lower back pain is usually sudden. There is often an exact cause of such a severe pain. If you experience such a sharp or unbearable lower back pain, then one should hurry to the hospital.

Severe lower back pain causes :

  • Possibly an injury : It could be due to an injury. One may injure his or her during a fall, or while exercising or playing sports. Muscle strains or ligament tears are often quite painful. They may create swelling and burning sensation at the spot which is injured.
  • Sciatic nerve pain : The major cause of excruciatingly sharp lower back pain is sciatica. This nerve in the lower back region may get pinched because of many reasons and then cause sharp pains. The pain feels like an pins and needles sensation. It affects many pregnant women also. Sciatica pain often runs down the buttocks into the legs.
  • Joint Dysfunction in the spine : Our spine is made up of intricately connected bone sections known as vertebrae. If for any reason, a vertebrae does not do its job or gets confined, then this can cause pain in a particular motion. This is what happens in facet joint pain. One may have pain in the back that worsens while twisting the neck to one side, or when bending the upper body to one side.
  • Fracture : Any fracture of the spine, whether as small as a compression fracture in a small region, or a major fracture, both cause sharp, deep felt pain in the back. Compression fractures are not common but they can happen even without strong forces if the bones become weak due to osteoporosis.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease : This condition is not common. In fact, the discs in the spine degenerate over time in every person. But, in some people the degenerative process if fast. This condition weakens the spine and leads to severe back pain.
  • Cauda Equina syndrome : This is a nervous condition in which a bunch of nerves in the spinal cord get affected. These nerves perform many important functions. Due to this syndrome, there can be sharp, burning pain in the lower back, hips, legs and even in the ankle.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis : It is disease that affects the joints of the body, particularly the spine. This condition causes sharp pain in middle and lower back which may get slightly better with exercises. In later stages, it can cause complete fusion of the spine, making the backbone rigid. This disease is known to affect men more than women. It is similar to arthritis.
  • Spinal Stenosis : This is a serious condition which causes pain and a number of other symptoms. In this disease, the spine narrows and affects the nerves. A common symptoms which almost all people feel is pain while standing. There can be severe lower back pain while standing or lying down, along with numbness in feet and difficulty in maintaining balance while standing. If this condition progresses further, it can damage the ability of nerves to convey sensations. This condition can be prevented or delayed with regular exercise.
Severe lower back pain usually does not relieve with massage or rest and thus indicates that there is some serious problem in the back. Relief is obtained from treatment.
