Right Upper Quadrant Pain Causes

Right upper quadrant pain is the pain that is felt in one of the quadrants of the abdomen. The region above the navel and to the right side of the body is called right upper quadrant. Pain in this region is often severe due to the presence of vital organs in this region. Most people would refer to pain in this region as pain in the upper right abdomen.

Causes of right upper quadrant pain :

  • Liver disease : The liver is often the probable cause of pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Liver is a large organ and takes up most of the space in this region. It can suffer from diseases like hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C , jaundice, fatty liver and the more dangerous liver cancer. Liver can also get cirrhosis which is scarring of the liver. There are many other symptoms of liver disease like frequent vomiting, yellowing of the skin and eyes, weakness and poor digestion. The pain that results from liver disease often cause pain in the right shoulder near the scapula at the back and the collarbone in the front. If the liver enzymes of a person 
  • Cirrhosis of the liver : This is a common condition which can be caused by side effects of certain medication and many other causes. There is often swelling and retention of fluid in the belly making it larger in size. 
  • Gallstones pain : If the gallbladder is blocked by gallstones then it can cause very sharp pain in the upper right abdomen. This is a medical emergency and the person should rush to the hospital. The treatment is surgical removal of the gallbladder in most cases. However, some people are able to remove these gallstones out themselves using flush techniques.
  • Gallbladder inflammation : The gallbladder may also get inflamed due to many causes. This increase in size can cause pain and burning sensation in the upper right quadrant. One can experience other symptoms like poorer digestion, mild pain all over abdomen and nausea. 
  • Diverticulitis in the colon can cause pain in the upper right quadrant. This disease is an inflammation of pouches on the inner wall of the large intestine. A small section of the large intestine passes through the region marked by right upper quadrant. So, when there is diverticulitis in that section, the pain can be felt in upper right abdomen. 
  • Other colon diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis may cause vague abdominal pain which is sharp and may be felt in right upper quadrant of abdomen. 
  • Pleura inflammation : A thin membrane pleura protects the internal organs of the chest. This may get inflamed and cause pain. If the inflammation is in the right side of chest, then there can be right upper quadrant pain due to the chest. 
  • Ulcer in the duodenum ( an organ of the digestive tract ) also causes right upper quadrant pain. This is usually felt 2 to 3 hours after taking a meal.
